Launch of Joint Research Projects with Outstanding Researchers Overseas

~ Toward realizing KDDI Accelerate 5.0, our concept of the future society~

October 26, 2020
KDDI Research, Inc.

KDDI Research (with head office at Fujimino-shi, Saitama and Hajime Nakamura as its Chief Executive Officer) has launched joint research projects with first-class researchers from abroad to envision together 2030 as the realization of best possible lifestyle for each consumer. In October 2020, KDDI Research has initiated research projects with seven distinguished researchers from five universities overseas who are working on advanced research themes in the AI and wireless communication fields. From FY2021, KDDI Research will gradually expand this activity.

KDDI Research has positioned its center of research in Fujimino-shi, Saitama as the “Advanced Technology Laboratories”, leading state of the art research mainly on technologies in seven fields and the orchestration between these technologies within “KDDI Accelerate 5.0”.
The approach of the “Advanced Technology Laboratories” is to conduct the joint research for several years, and several researchers from both KDDI Research and the foreign universities shall be dedicated to each project and shall collaborate with each other to achieve top-grade, world-class research outputs.

■Comments by Satoshi Konishi, President of Advanced Technology Laboratories
KDDI Research has established in October the “Advanced Technology Laboratories” with these joint research projects as its notable feature. Through this activity, we shall contribute to the immediate realization of Society 5.0, a concept advocated by the government of Japan, along with accelerating and deepening advanced research in seven technological fields illustrated in “KDDI Accelerate 5.0”. This can be achieved by enhancing research and development organization via globalization of advanced research activity, human resource development, and invitation or acquisition of researchers, and this enhancement leads to applied research and demonstrative experiments.

■About “KDDI Accelerate 5.0”
"KDDI Accelerate 5.0" is a concept which KDDI and KDDI Research have formulated - a concept that envisions the future society of 2030. The concept is aimed at accelerating the realization of Society 5.0, a sustainable consumer-centric society where economic development is spurred and social issues are solved simultaneously with 5G. By upgrading the environment in three layers—platform, business, as well as networks, and by promoting research and development of technologies in seven fields and the orchestration between these technologies for close collaboration, KDDI and KDDI Research will realize the advanced integration of physical (real) spaces and cyber (virtual) spaces. Such integration will allow all consumers to enjoy the benefits of technologies safely without being aware of the space they are in. Through these efforts, KDDI and KDDI Research aim to create a resilient future society that contributes to establishing new lifestyles for consumers as well as spurring economic development and solving social issues in Japan.
